08/18/17 On a recent food escapade to Vancouver, BC, I came across an upscale taco joint in Gastown. Although Gastown is a relatively touristy part of town, I was still able to uncover a ST-level Bigtime Bite. The Carnitas Fritas Taco at La Mezcaleria is not to be missed on this menu. Although not worth a trip to Vancouver all on its own (unlike some of the other Bigtime dishes in Vancouver's underrated food scene), I definitely recommend it if you're feeling like some Mexican food while in the area. The 6" taco is comprised of a generous portion of pan fried pork confit, then topped with cilantro, fresh onions, chile de arbol, and green avocado sauce, and accompanied by some pickled onions and a lime wedge. The pork was on point - crispy, yet juicy and full of flavor. No one likes a taco falling apart after the first bite because the tortilla is too weak to contain the contents, so I also appreciated the sturdiness of these corn tortillas. Although this place isn't the cheapest - you'll drop $6+ for a single taco - the tacos are larger than your average street taco and it only takes 2-3 of them to feel like a meal (unless you're Rich Cho, of course - then you'll need 5-6).
