This dish is about as All-American as it gets; this dining experience was also very much a “when in Rome” moment. A Detroit local once told me I had to try (local favorite) a ‘Coney Island’ while in Detroit. A Coney Island...in Detroit...? Don’t ask me...anyway, my first stop after flying into Detroit recently: Sunny’s Coney Island. I promptly ordered a Coney Special and I was equally satisfied + ready for a nap afterward. With this thing, what you see is what you get: juicy hot dog, accompanied by your standard chili, ‘loose burger,’ (very sloppy joe-esque), chopped raw onion, and topped off with some mustard. Better yet, this is the cheapest lunch I think I’ve ever had and the service was great, too. If you’re a hot dog fan, you have to give this puppy a try next time you’re in Detroit! (or Coney Island, NY, I suppose...)
